Identified as: Laurel Sassafras

Comments:

Laurel Sassafras leaves are alternately arranged and shinier. This plant has opposite, very "leathery" non-shiney leaves. No odor when crushed. Milky sap.

Comments:

The plant in question has "velvety" leaves in opposite arrangement. Red mulberry key lists leaves as "shiny green above..." with alternate arrangement. The red mulberry has a rough furrowed bark. My specimen has smooth gray bark.
